Dogs
…
Dogs were the first animal humans ever domesticated — the partnership with the grey wolf began at least 15,000 years ago, long before agriculture. Millennia of selection for herding, guarding, hunting, hauling and companionship produced the most physically varied mammal species on Earth: from a 1.5 kg Chihuahua to a 90 kg Mastiff, all one species, all reading human gestures better than any other animal alive. Choosing a dog is choosing a daily rhythm for the next decade or more. Working and sporting breeds need genuine exercise and a job for their brain; companion breeds trade athletic demands for a deep need for human presence. Whatever the breed, the essentials repeat: early socialization, reward-based training, dental and parasite care, and a vet relationship that starts with the first vaccinations — not the first emergency.
