Cats

Cats domesticated themselves: when the first grain stores of the Fertile Crescent attracted rodents some 10,000 years ago, the boldest African wildcats moved in, and the deal — pest control for shelter — still stands. Genetically, the cat purring on your couch is barely changed from Felis lybica; that independence is not aloofness but a complete predator's toolkit in a 4 kg body. Indoor cats now routinely live 15–20 years. The keys are surprisingly consistent across breeds: vertical territory (climbing trees, shelves), daily play that mimics hunting, scratching outlets, scrupulous litter hygiene, and weight control — obesity is the most common feline health problem. Cats hide illness masterfully, so subtle changes in appetite, grooming or litter habits are the early-warning system every owner should learn to read.
